Utopia

Colour is the joy of life - Bruno Taut. This was the starting point for the Utopia collection. Taut believed in a classless society, at one with nature. His Berlin housing estates are full of colour and details marking each home and neighbourhood as individual, showing an understanding of what we want from our homes lost on some other modernist projects. His other best known work is a vision of future cities called ‘Alpine Architecture’ conceived during the first world war. I noticed the same joy in colour in the Anni Albers exhibition at the Tate Modern, working around the same time as Taut. I particularly loved the piece above with it’s electric pinks, oranges and blue. For this collection I wanted to draw in those feelings of joy, individuality and hope. Casting multi-colour stones allows for an element of the unexpected making each of these pieces unique.

If you’d like to find out more about Bruno Taut check out this article from Architectuul, and the Tate has a great article on Anni Albers here.
